Today in the SCFL Walking Over 50s League, Worthing Reds hosted our club's Worthing Whites. A tough game ahead, with Reds needing a win to secure the league title against a dogged Whites. In a frantic first 5 minutes, both sides gave the ball away far too easily. Pete Stone tested Matthew Pettman, who was equal to it.
Then, out of nowhere, Dave Pearson picked up the ball, went past 2 White players, and calmly slotted into the net: 1-0 Reds. After that, both sides went at each other, and another moment of brilliance saw Carl Etherington score a solo goal (although some say he was running): 2-0. Whites had a chance, but a smart save from Reds' Keeper kept it 2-0.
Into the 2nd half, Whites came out strongly, pushing Reds into a couple of mistakes, but they went unpunished. About 10 minutes into the 2nd half, up popped Dave Pearson again with another calm finish after an excellent Red Team move: 3-0. Both sides continued to go at each other, bringing out a brilliant save from Matt in Whites' Goal. Reds also hit the woodwork a couple of times before Reds' Keeper made a good save at full stretch (1 for the cameras, his teammates taunted).
3-0 win and the league title... Great game of competitive walking football, make no mistake, the Whites made the Reds work for the title. Commiserations to Richard Gander and his White Team... Congratulations to Peter Knee and his Red Team on his first piece of silverware... Fantastic day for Worthing F.C. Seniors...
Many thanks to Dave for organizing nibbles after in the bar.
