On a sunny morning at Worthing Leisure Centre, our Over 60s took on Old Varndenians in The SCFL Walking League. It was a battle for the league title between two unbeaten sides. Blacks started slow, and Old Varndenians had the first shot, with Peter Bow at full stretch pushing the ball wide. Blacks were playing well, and a team move saw poacher Duncan Moore grab his first goal: 1-0. Straight from kickoff, Old Varndenians drew level: 1-1. Then, a quick Old Varndenians free kick saw them squeeze the ball in off the keeper and the post into the net: 1-2. Blacks again took control, and another swift move saw Duncan fire in his second: 2-2. Blacks then took the lead when John Ling turned sharply: 3-2. Again, Old Varndenians drew level: 3-3 at halftime. Both teams had the best two defensive records prior to the game.
Blacks took the lead again when a quick free kick went to Ade Cooper, who fired in to give us a 4-3 lead. Old Varndenians drew level again: 4-4. Duncan Moore then scored a penalty to give Blacks a 5-4 lead. Old Varndenians scored again: 5-5. John Ling then scored to give Blacks a 6-5 victory in a tough game neither team deserved to lose. A double for our club with both 50s and 60s winning their respective leagues. Congratulations to Andy Benn and his squad.
A big shout out to the 30-odd supporters who cheered us through the game.
Last but not least, to Referee Mike Mighall who did a great job.
