We traveled to East Sussex in The SCFL Walking Over 50s Cup to face Battle. Arriving early, we were told to wait 'til 5pm as the venue was a school. It was bitterly cold, but straight from the off, Worthing went on the attack in a game they ended up completely dominating.
First up was Pete Stone to test the keeper, who pulled off the first of at least 8 outstanding saves. Chris Lelliot then hit the post. Carl Etherington also had a go... Pete Stone again stretched the keeper, and so it went on. Carl Etherington was sin-binned for 2 minutes for his 3rd running offence just before halftime...
0-0...
During the game, both Pete Stone and Lee Smart scored good goals, but unfortunately, the ref disallowed both for running, which was harsh to say the least. In the second half, Worthing continued as they had in the 1st half, but with a new keeper in goal for Battle, it was the same story. As Carl rejoined the team, Lee Smart hit the post, and Battle's new keeper pulled off 9 or 10 fantastic saves from Pete, Lee, and Chris.
With time running out, Peter Bow played a long ball to Pete Stone, who turned his man and slotted under the keeper to a huge sigh of relief in the Worthing team:
1-0...
This spurred Battle to have a go, and a quick free kick brought the best out of Pete in goal as he got down smartly to tip the ball out for a corner. Pete Stone had another chance, but again, an excellent stop by their keeper... Full time: 1-0. Great result from the team who work extremely hard against a resilient Battle side, who had 2 outstanding keepers to make what looks like a respectable scoreline, but I'm sure Peter Knee was a very satisfied manager... It was Battle's first defeat of the season."
