Today, our Over 50s played in the WFA National Cup Regional Final away against Insulators, who were an unknown side. Peter Knee took the team away, only for the home team to score first from a free kick that deflected off Stuart Baldock past Duncan Green in goal. We hit back almost immediately with Carl Etherington scoring, putting the keeper on the floor and sliding the ball past him.
The game then finished and went into extra time, during which Lee Smart smashed the ball home. Unfortunately, the referee disallowed the goal, saying he was in the area, although even their players and fans said he was miles outside.
So, it went to penalties. Carl scored, Lee missed, and Guy scored, bringing the score to 1-1 and 2-2 on penalties.
Onto sudden death: they had a penalty disallowed for taking it before the referee had blown his whistle. Dave Pearson stepped up to win the game but missed. They scored, so Duncan stepped up next and shot, but the keeper made a good save down to his right, giving them the win 3-2 on penalties.
Valiant effort, guys.
