On a bright afternoon with the occasional shower, we travelled to Hove Park for the WFA National Over 60s Cup match against rivals Brighton Dolphins. Both teams were eager to assert their dominance on the game.
The Dolphins had the first opportunity, hitting the post. They followed up with another shot that was deflected off the post for a corner. However, Reds regained possession, and John Ling scored his first goal of the hat-trick.
The Dolphins' goalkeeper made numerous quality saves to keep them in the game. At halftime, the score was 1-0 in favor of Reds. In the second half, Reds continued to create chances, and John scored his second goal. Brighton made some changes and started to counterattack, testing Reds' goalkeeper who made three excellent saves.
Eventually, John completed his hat-trick with a goal from a swift Reds' counterattack. However, in the final minute, there was a defensive error that allowed Brighton to score. Despite this, Reds secured a comfortable 3-1 victory and advanced to the next round.
Congratulations to Andy Benn and his team. Lastly, a special mention to Referee Steve Tomlin, whose excellent understanding of the game made playing under his officiation very enjoyable.
